How Does Multi-Disc Screw Press Work?
The multi-disc screw press operates based on the principle of screw extrusion. It dewaters sludge by applying strong internal pressure generated from changes in the screw shaft’s diameter and pitch, along with the narrow gaps between moving and fixed rings.
The main structure consists of a filter unit formed by alternating fixed and moving rings, through which a screw shaft runs. The machine is divided into two main zones: the concentration section and the dewatering section. In the concentration section, sludge is pre-thickened by gravity, allowing excess water to drain naturally. Then, the sludge is conveyed into the dewatering section. As it moves forward:
- The filter gaps gradually narrow
- The screw pitch becomes smaller
- The back pressure plate creates resistance
These combined factors result in increasing internal pressure that compresses the sludge and reduces its volume. Water is squeezed out through the gaps between the rings, resulting in a dewatered sludge cake with a significantly reduced moisture content.
