With an initial moisture content of 80–85%, untreated spent grains are heavy, unstable, and expensive to transport or dispose of. A screw press dewatering machine is a reliable and widely used solution for dewatering spent grains. Dewatering Process of Spent Grains
1. Pre-Treatment
- Crushing: Larger clumps of spent grains are broken down into uniform particles to improve press efficiency.
- Mixing: For materials with uneven moisture distribution, like beer spent grains, this step can improve the overall pressing result.
2. Pressing
- Feeding Control: White wine grains require slow feeding to prevent overload, while rice wine lees need steady, even feeding to prevent blockages.
- Pressure Adjustment: Pressure is controlled by adjusting screw speed and outlet gap. For example, materials with higher fiber content, such as white wine grains, require greater pressure. Recommended pressure sequence: White wine > rice wine > beer.
3. Discharge and Filtration
- Discharging: During the pressing process, the liquid is filtered out of the screen, while the solid material is discharged via the outlet.
- After dewatering, the moisture content of the spent grains can be reduced to 55%-60%, making them suitable for direct use as animal feed or for further drying and processing.
